Bookbinding is a study program at secondary school level. The course teaches the final preparation of printed material, both with computer-controlled machines and by hand. Book repair and carving of materials, such as business cards, brochures and calendars, are also covered.

A study program in bokbinding has been taught at the Technical College (Tækniskólinn – skóli atvinnulifsins).

Applicants must have completed compulsory education in accordance with the National Curriculum Guide for Compulsory Schools as well as undergraduate studies in information and media disciplines before bookbinding can be chosen as a specialty.

The program has been credit-worthy at the Student Education Fund (Menntasjóður námsmanna). Trade union education funds often provide scholarships for study. Get more information from your union.

Bookbinding studies are divided into general theoretical subjects, bookbinding specialties and vocational training. The student makes a study agreement with a master in the subject where the internship takes place.

The study program takes about two years in addition to 48 weeks of internship.

After graduation

After completing studies and vocational training, it is possible to take a journeyman’s examination that entitles you to work in the field as well as admission to studies for a master craftsman’s exam. It is also possible to complete additional studies for a matriculation examination.
