Service studies

Service studies is a study program at secondary school level. The program includes increasing understanding and skills in receiving guests and preparing a variety of meals, providing appropriate services and advice as well as making wine lists and menus and plans for banquets. It is possible to have skills acquired in the labour market evaluated.


Service is a certified trade. The average study period is three years, including 80 weeks of internship.

Study

Service studies are taught at Menntaskólinn í Kópavogi and have also been offered at Verkmenntaskólinn á Akureyri.

Requirements

Applicants must have completed compulsory education in accordance with the National Curriculum Guide for Compulsory Schools, see more on the school’s website.

The service studies program has been credit-worthy at the Student Education Fund (Menntasjóður námsmanna). Trade unions often provide scholarships for study. Get more information from your union.

Curriculum

The service studies program is divided into general theoretical subjects, specialties and vocational training. The first one to two semesters are spent in basic training in the food and restaurant disciplines, after which students specialize in service. The student makes a study agreement with a master in the subject where the internship takes place.

After graduation

After completing studies and vocational training, it is possible to take a journeyman’s examination that entitles you to work in the field as well as admission to studies for a master craftsman’s exam. It is also possible to complete additional studies for a matriculation examination.
