Equestrian studies

Equestrian studies are a work-related study program at the secondary school level. It covers the basic aspects of equestrianism and students are prepared for any type of horse-related activity, such as on horse farms, in horse-related tourism or at other similar companies. Upon graduation, students should be able to perform the most common tasks related to the care of horses and to assist with their training. Also to assist clients on riding trips with horse-related tourism companies.


Validation of prior learning has taken place in the discipline where skills from the labour market are assessed.


The average study period is approximately three years, including 12 weeks of vocational training.

Study

Equestrian study paths have been available at Fjölbrautaskóli Suðurlands and Fjölbrautaskóli Norðurlands vestra in addition to an equestrian electoral path on the open student path of Framhaldsskólinn í Mosfellsbæ.

Shorter courses to increase one’s own skills in tourism have also been offered at educational and lifelong learning centers, which provide further information.

At the university level, studies in horse science leading to a BS degree are available at The Agricultural University of Iceland and Hólar University.

Requirements

Applicants must have completed compulsory education in accordance with the National Curriculum Guide for Compulsory Schools. Check whether the study program is credit-worthy at the Student Education Fund. Trade unions often provide scholarships for study. Get more information from your union.

Curriculum

The study program is divided into general theoretical subjects, the study path specialties and vocational training. Vocational training takes place in the summer at the end of the first and second year. Please note that the study program or part of it might be taught via distance learning.

After graduation

There are opportunities for various jobs related to horses and tourism. It is also possible to have part of the program evaluated for matriculation from the theoretical studies program.
