Sign language studies and sign language interpretation is a study program at university level. The program aims to teach students skills in Icelandic sign language and provide them with knowledge of the cultural world of the deaf. Students receive training in language use, the grammar of the sign language and education about the culture and history of the deaf.

Study

Sign language studies and sign language interpretation have been taught within the Faculty of Icelandic and Cultural Studies and the School of Humanities at the University of Iceland.

Requirements

Admission requirements are a matriculation examination or a comparable degree. Knowledge of Icelandic sign language is not required at the start of the course. 

The program is credit-worthy for subsistence and tuition fees at the Student Education Fund (Menntasjóður námsmanna). Trade union education funds often provide scholarships for study. Get more information from your union.

Curriculum

The study program is based on lectures, discussions and group work. Emphasis is placed on student participation in classes, especially those involving training in language use and interpretation.

The program is taught in Icelandic or Icelandic sign language.

After graduation

After a 180-credit study in sign language studies (major subject) and sign language interpretation, students graduate as sign language interpreters.
