Assistant Principal

The assistant principal at a primary school participates in organizing the school work, supervising and communicating daily with students, parents and colleagues with the aim of ensuring a peaceful work environment at the school, and that students feel good there and are safe. In the absence of the principal, the assistant principal is responsible for the daily operations and activities at the school.


As an assistant principal at a primary school, you work closely with students, parents, teachers and other staff as well as the school’s support services.

Main tasks

In consultation with the principal:

– human resources management
– managing policy and collaborative projects
– preparation of school curricula and school development projects
– disciplinary offenses and disputes
– administration of study materials
– assessment and examination management
– creating schedules

Competence requirements

The assistant principal at a primary school must be able to work independently and systematically. It is also important to have good interpersonal communication and to have ambition and interest in the education of children and adolescents. It is necessary to be able to lead the collaboration and dialogue between different individuals and be able to present the school work inside and outside the school.

Study

Assistant principals must have qualifications as primary school teachers as well as additional education in management or teaching experience at the primary school level. The study program is offered at the Faculty of Education at the University of Iceland and the Faculty of Education at the University of Akureyri.
