A quality inspector monitors raw materials, hygiene, cleaning and equipment during fish processing to meet the quality requirements of the company and buyers. The job includes keeping track of records, reporting deviations and alerting if quality is lacking.

A quality inspector works as a subordinate of the quality manager.

Main tasks
  • ensuring that work procedures are followed and that consistency is observed during sampling and processing
  • observe that hygiene is satisfactory, along with cleaning and condition of equipment
  • Monitoring preparation of raw materials, how fish is processed, cooling and temperature
  • ensuring that packaging is clean and properly labelled
  • searching for defects, taking samples, and final inspection of products
Competence requirements

A quality inspector must be familiar with fish processing and the raw materials that are being processed at any given time. It is important to have a good overview and to be present when processing is in progress. A quality inspector must be able to work independently, ensuring that work is carried out according to procedures and guiding and intervening if quality is lacking.

Study

The Icelandic College of Fisheries offers a study program in quality management. The study period is one year divided into two semesters and is taught in distributed learning and local sessions.
