Massage therapist

Massage therapists massage stiff muscles and provide treatment for poor health in order to promote well-being, relaxation and a healthy lifestyle. The work of a massage therapist supports other treatments, such as those provided by physiotherapists or doctors.

In a job as a massage therapists, you could work in many places, such as massage parlours, gyms, healthcare institutions and sports clubs.

• advising on a healthy lifestyle, prevention and proper posture

Competence requirements

A massage therapist needs to have the knowledge and skills to massage others for health and well-being and be able to provide guidance on health promotion and a healthy lifestyle. A massage therapist must be able to work independently, show initiative and be able to prioritize tasks. It is also necessary to be able to provide first aid in the event of an accident or mishap.


A massage therapy study program is on offer at Fjölbrautaskólinn við Ármúla. The average study period is two and a half to three and a half years, including internship. The study program has also been on offer at Framhaldsskólinn á Húsavík.
