Painters performs original painting and repainting on buildings, structures and ships, both indoors and outdoors. The job also involves spackling, repairing surfaces and decorating. Painters work in new and reconstructed buildings, perform maintenance and repair for master painters, in consulting and colour mixing in shops or perform product development and production in paint factories. Painter is a legally protected job title.

Main tasks

• advising on the choice of colours, materials and working methods
• preparatory work; removing rust, brushing, scraping and high pressure washing
• repairing cracks and other damages

Competence requirements

A painter needs to know all the main materials used in painting, colour theory and the consequences of moisture, mold and fumes. It is also beneficial to have knowledge og building preservation and older painting methods. Painters work both indoors and outdoors, mostly by hand, but also use computer-based drawing and design software. The work involves brushes, rollers, roller trays, sprayers, spatulas, sandpaper, sanding rocks and many other tools.

Study

Painting study programs are offered at Tækniskólinn and Verkmenntaskólinn á Akureyri. The average duration of study is four years, divided into four semesters of theoretical studies and 96 weeks of internship. Basic study programs in construction and civil engineering disciplines are also available at many secondary schools. Validation of prior learning has taken place and/or may be available.
