Nutritionists advise individuals and groups on the effects of diet on health. The job involves maintaining the best possible nutritional status of individuals and promoting their well-being. The advice of nutritionists also extends to health authorities, food producers, canteens and NGOs where the desired diet, nutrition and hygiene are discussed. Nutritionist is a certified healthcare profession.

Nutritionists can specialize in the nutritional treatment of certain diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, gastrointestinal diseases, paediatrics, kidney disease and diabetes, or specialize in teaching at the secondary and university levels. As a nutritionist, you could work in a medical institution and/or provide advice to public institutions, food companies and the general public.

• advice on general diet and special diets
• selection of special diets in consultation with other healthcare professionals
• advice to relatives of patients and tips on food choices
• research in the field of nutrition

Competence requirements

Nutritionists receive an operating license from the Medical Director of Health and a BS degree in nutrition is required, as well as a minimum of one year of postgraduate studies in nutrition counselling. A nutritionist must be able to be responsible for the prevention and advice provided, in addition to which it is important to know professional limitations and respect confidentiality when appropriate.

Study

Nutrition is taught at the Faculty of Food and Nutrition at the University of Iceland. A BS degree in nutrition is required, as well as a minimum of one year of postgraduate studies in nutrition counselling. Part of the studies involves vocational training in a hospital or health institution.
