Electronics engineers work with the installation and repair of electronic devices, electronic communications systems and computer equipment. The job involves designing, building and programming simple electronic and control circuits. An electronics engineer has solid knowledge of computer hardware, software and network equipment as well as broadcasting and reception of electronic communications signals. Electronics engineer is a legally protected job title.

As an electronics engineer, you could work in workshops, industrial and energy companies, and in aircraft, ocean vessels and land vehicles.

Competence requirements

An electronics engineer must be well acquainted with hardware, software and network equipment as well as being able to read and draw electronic drawings and to troubleshoot. It is important to know the main methods for transmitting and receiving electronic communications signals and be able to design and install electronic communications systems.

Electronics engineers work a lot by hand, using the measuring tools and hand tools that are relevant at any given time, and need to be well acquainted with safety issues in the industry.

Study

Electronics engineering is taught at Tækniskólinn and Verkmenntaskólinn á Akureyri but a two-year undergraduate degree in electrical engineering is also offered at many secondary schools. The average duration of study in electronics engineering is four years, divided into seven semesters of theoretical studies and 30 weeks of internship.
