Planners work on plans for land use and urban development. The work aims to combine and settle different points of view when decisions are made about the future use of the land and its resources, such as the planning of residential areas, transport and the location of large industrial sites. Planner is a certified professional title.

Planners work in government institutions doing management, research and supervision, in municipal planning offices and increasingly as independent consultants in the preparation of regional, master and local plans.

Competence requirements

Planners must have completed a master’s degree in planning in order to obtain professional qualification. As a planner, it is important to be able to give an account of your work in speech and writing. Resourcefulness, analytical skills and solution-oriented thinking are also important qualities. It is also good to have an eye for details and be able to approach organizational tasks in a practical manner. Familiarity with design and planning programs is beneficial, as the job involves drawing models and graphs.
