Secondary school science study paths offer general but varied theoretical studies with an emphasis on mathematics, together with subjects and methods of natural science disciplines such as physics, chemistry, biology and geology. These study paths are not least designed to prepare for further studies in natural sciences, technical subjects or clinical sciences. The program ends with a matriculation examination.

Requirements

Admission requirements for natural science study paths can vary somewhat depending on the school and it is advisable to check them on the schools’ websites. Students must, however, have completed compulsory school with a certain minimum grade in the core subjects of Icelandic, English and mathematics.

Curriculum

Studies in natural science study paths are mostly theoretical and are always divided into core and elective subjects, where specialization is offered in subjects such as physics, chemistry, geology, biology, mathematics and computer science. It is always important to choose your elective courses with university entrance criteria in mind. Teaching and learning methods can vary, but are often project-oriented and based on collaboration and conversation between students as well as with teachers.

Study

Natural science study paths or similar study programs have been offered at most secondary schools and it is advisable to find out more on the websites of each individual school.

After graduation

Natural science study paths can be good preparation for continuing studies in subjects that require a good basic knowledge of science and mathematics. Examples include engineering, computer science, physics, chemistry, geology and biology as well as healthcare, technology and business subjects.
